The western diet has become highly deficient in Omega 3 and healthy vegetable oils. Most farmers supplement their feeding regimes with genetically modified corn and grain. Cattle were meant to eat grass, not corn, soybeans and grain, and certainly not chicken waste. Over 90% of all animal feed is genetically modified. Although this fattens up the animals quickly and cheaply (and is highly profitable for the meat producers) it has turned a healthy source of protein, fatty acids, and minerals into a witch’s brew of drugs and unhealthy saturated fats. Substituting corporate feed lots for grass pasture has virtually eliminated Omega 3 and other beneficial fatty acids from meat.

So, as an alternative to beef and pork, fish has been widely promoted as a better source of Omega 3. The FDA has just approved the switch from natural Salmon to a genetically engineered new super species that grows over twice as fast as the natural species. Because this new species will dramatically improve the already high profits made by fish farm operators almost all of them are expected to adopt the new Frankenfish. This means that within a few months virtually all fish oil supplements will be made from this fish. Since this fish is not a product of natural selection, and did not exist outside of a laboratory until now, it has never been consumed by a large population of humans. No one really knows what the effects of eating this fish will be on humans. The AquAdvantage salmon, as it is named, contains a growth hormone gene from the Chinook salmon and a genetic on-switch from the ocean pout (an eel like fish), resulting in the continuous production of growth hormone. The salmon grows to market size in 16 to 18 months instead of three years for a natural fish. Did the USDA ask you if you wanted to eat a genetically engineered fish? Don’t feel bad. They did not ask the marine biologists who are experts in this field either. The FDA hearings were closed to the public and no review was allowed by experts outside of the FDA, the same FDA that has approved drugs over the strong opposition of its own scientists, and later had to withdraw the drugs due to the serious harm they caused to users.

It is possible, as the FDA insists, that this new man made species of Salmon is safe and nutritious and that efforts to keep it out of the natural marine environment will be successful. Let’s truly hope so.
