98% of flaxseed oil is used in the paint industry.

It has a poor bioavailability and potency.

  • There is no health-promoting DHA in flaxseed oil.
  • Can worsen joint-related ailments.
  • Flaxseed oil goes rancid quickly.
  • Makes a great paint thinner, not a good supplement.

Less than 2% of all the flaxseed produced is used for human consumption. The remainder of this industrial-grade product is used as in the manufacture of paint and other materials. Importantly, flaxseed contains no DHA Omega 3, only ALA fatty chains. Your body can turn ALA into DHA  but the efficiency is very low and the majority of ALA is eliminated in the process. Another reason to avoid flaxseed is that it goes rancid quickly when exposed to light or air.

Flaxseed oil can worsen inflammatory joint ailments. The sale of Flaxseed oil as a dietary supplement is another example of green overwhelming good judgement and consumer safety.  This industrial commodity is very inexpensive.  It is likely that the cost of bottling and labeling a jar of flaxseed oil capsules is greater than the cost of the oil itself.  Again, profit is the reason flaxseed oil is sold as an Omega 3 supplement.  In our opinion the failings of this oil far exceed the small benefit it provides.

The low down on flaxseed oil

The primary use for flaxseed oil is to make paint and pigments. Over 98% of all flaxseed oil is used in industrial processes, not as a food or food additive. It is ideal to use in the manufacture of paint, not so good to consume in a gel cap as a source of Omega 3. It does have one huge advantage over other vegetable sources of Omega 3 however. It is cheap, extremely cheap, therefore sellers of flaxseed oil can make large profit margins.

Flaxseed may slow down the rate at which your body absorbs other nutrients including the vitamins A, E and D, and possibly some B complex vitamins. GO-3 actually improves the absorption of these nutrients and is rich in vitamins A and E, as well as extremely potent antioxidants and other nutrients.

Importantly, there is no DHA in flaxseed oil. Flaxseed only contains ALA, which has not shown effectiveness as a cardio-protective agent. Many people are not able to convert the ALA into to EPA and DHA, the forms the body is able to use. Over 95% of the ALA from flaxseed oil is lost in the conversion process. But GO-3 gives you essential lipids directly from dietary sources rich in EPA and DHA, including Martek Life's DHA oil, cranberry oil and Salba oil. No conversion is necessary. GO-3 is in a form that your body can utilize directly.

Flaxseed oil contains none of the beneficial fiber or lignan components of the flaxseed plant. GO-3 contains valuable Sesame Lignans.

According to the study published in ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’, flaxseed oil was also found to be much less effective against inflammatory conditions. Generally, flaxseed oil has been considered to be anti-inflammatory agent. But more recent studies reveal that it actually increased inflammation in most of the cases studied.

Allergies to flax seed oil are relatively common compared to most other foods and nutrients, and can result in serious, even critical, reactions. Some flaxseed allergies may be a result of the industrial solvents used to extract most flaxseed oils. The primary use for flaxseed oil is in the manufacture of paints and industrial pigments. Less than 1% of flaxseed production is allocated to human consumption.

Most doctors caution that flaxseed oil should not be taken by pregnant women. This caution may well apply to men as well due to the endocrine effects. Flax seed seems to modulate estrogen and other hormones, and appears to effect endocrine function. There is no such problem or caution pertaining to the oils in GO-3.

Flaxseed oil must be immediately refrigerated to prevent it from becoming rancid. It requires special packaging because it is easily destroyed by heat, light, and oxygen. Most suppliers do not bother with this. If left for more than a few weeks on a store shelf or out of the fridge it will become rancid and harmful rather than healthy to consume. GO-3 is a stabilized complex of healthy oils further protected by advanced antioxidants and a patented oxygen scavenging system called active packaging. It does not require refrigeration. Unlike flaxseed oil, it will not become rancid.
