The brain's ability to solve problems, create new ideas and simply to reason requires a healthy level of cerebral blood flow.
In a recently published double blind, peer-reviewed study at the University of Northumbria in the UK, a dose of both 250mg and 500mg of Resveratrol was shown to increase cerebral blood flow by 100% to 200% in 24 university student subjects.
The students were given one (250mg) or two capsules (500mg) of a supplement called Bioforte Resveratrol approximately 45 minutes before taking a mental test which required them to rapidly solve simple math problems presented on a computer. The control group of students who did not take the Resveratrol showed no difference in brain blood flow.
The Resveratrol administered resulted in dose-dependent increases in cerebral blood flow during mental tasks, and was measured by the total concentration of hemoglobin.
There was also an increase in deoxyhemoglobin after both doses of Resveratrol, which suggests enhanced oxygen extraction. This was noticeable toward the end of the 45-min absorption phase and throughout the tasks performance.
Cognitive function was not affected as Resveratrol metabolites were found to be present in plasma throughout the cognitive task period.
These results show that single doses of orally taken Resveratrol can increase cerebral blood flow.
